ABOUT

HISTORY

Once belonging to the Order of Avis, Herdade da Ordem was acquired by the family of the current owners in 1890.

In 1930, the main house was ordered to be built, which underwent only few changes until 2003, the year in which it underwent deeper construction works in order to be exploited as Rural Tourism.

Years passed and the tourist project crumbled, with the house being almost exclusively used for family purposes.

At the beginning of the pandemic, Joana, granddaughter of the current owner, returned to Portugal together with her husband Giovanni. Three months spent at Herdade da Ordem, in confinement, were the beginning of a new dream.

They started by organizing their own wedding in the summer of 2021 and as they saw the results, enthusiasm grew. This Estate was waiting for them to be reborn.

Joana studied Hotel Management and has been gaining experience in the area for more than 10 years, having worked around the world between Hospitality and Restaurants. It was on one of these journeys that she met her husband Giovanni. Gio is Italian and a chef, he has had a culinary tradition in his family for several generations and it was in the family pizzeria that he began, at the age of 14, to learn to take his first steps in the kitchen. Along the way, he also graduated in agriculture.

In 2022, together, they decided to tackle this project with all their passion. The refurbishment, done with their own hands, started with the rooms and has been developing throughout the farm. The vegetable garden, which is growing rapidly, produces part of the food made available to guests. From the chicken coop come the eggs consumed in the house. The bread, whenever possible, is handcrafted in a wood-fired oven built by themselves. It is also through this oven that Gio gives wings to his culinary imagination, where traditional Italian pizzas cannot be missed.

This project is based on social and environmental sustainability. It is intended, on the one hand, to create the smallest possible environmental footprint and, on the other hand, to foster the spirit of helping, cooperating, promoting and supporting the local community.

The Estate is made up of 270ha of Alentejo`s Montado where farming ranges from olive groves to cattle ranching and, as the Alentejo landscapes have become accustomed to, cork oak forests. 5ha are allocated to Casa de Campo. Here you will find 6 double rooms with private bathroom and a delicious breakfast served every morning with local products and also produced in-house. The pool is surrounded by nature, where the silence is broken by the sounds of sheep rattling, cows mooing and frogs croaking. In the cold winter evenings, the large fireplace in the guest house is an invitation to socialize, accompanied by a good wine, cheeses and sausages from the region. It is still the dream place to celebrate a wedding, the baptism of a dear child or another year of life.

And so goes this adventure, which has just begun. We are delighted to welcome you, show you all the work we have accomplished so far and make you feel at home. Come and meet our animals. Come and taste the tomato from our vegetable garden, the fresh cheese made from sheep's milk and a pizza in a wood oven. Join us and let yourself be carried away by the peace and tranquility of the countryside!
